«A la fin de la ruée vers l’or, entre 1890 et 1920, l’Ouest américain montre une succession de villes fantômes que les habitants ont désertées au profit de grandes métropoles, où ils ont le sentiment d’une sécurité économique et sociale plus grande. L’abandon est total et instantané. Cent ans plus tard, fin 2008, de nouvelles villes fantômes se forment à travers les États-Unis. La récession économique et la crise des subprimes, comme en son temps le retour à la dure réalité des chercheurs d’or, précipitent la fin d’un éternel rêve américain, celui de la course à la richesse et à la possession.
Il n’y a qu’aux États-Unis que tant de gens ont été contraints de quitter si soudainement leur domicile. Ce mélange d’illusions perdues, de naïveté, mais aussi de résilience et de courage dans l’adversité, m’a très fortement impressionnée lors de plusieurs voyages que j’ai pu faire en 2008 dans l’Ouest américain. Les maisons des subprimes, ouvertes aux quatre vents, ressemblent aux villes fantômes du XIXe siècle. Un monde étrange où tout à coup ne subsisterait plus que la trace des vies interrompues, fragile témoin d’une économie sans âme.»
Née le 10 juillet 1981 aux États-Unis, Molly vit et travaille à Paris. Après avoir obtenu deux Masters en Histoire de l’Art et en Français au College of Charleston, Caroline du Sud, elle déménage à Paris pour étudier la photographie. Diplômée de Spéos en 2004-2005, elle assiste ensuite plusieurs photographes renommés comme Patrick Demarchelier, Carter Smith et Eric Maillet. Actuellement, elle se consacre au développement de son travail photographique.

The abandoned houses of the American dream
«At the end of the gold rush, between 1890 and 1920, the American West displayed a succession of ghost towns, left by their inhabitants who returned to the cities and the illusion of greater social and economic security. The abandonment was total and instant. One hundred years later, at the end of 2008, new ghost-like towns have spread once again across the United States.
Today’s economic recession and the subprime mortgage crisis have had the same effect as the return to harsh reality for the gold hunters one century earlier: they precipitated the end of an eternal American dream, the hunt for material riches and possession. It is only in the United States that so many people were forced to abandon their homes so suddenly. This mix of lost illusions and naïvety, of resilience and courage in the face of adversity, struck me during my multiple trips across the American West in 2008. The subprime houses, wide open to the wind, are reminiscent of the ghost towns of the 19th Century. A strange world where only the traces of interrupted lives remain, serving as fragile witnesses to a soulless economy.»
Born on July 10th, 1981 in the United States, Molly lives and works in Paris. After obtaining two Masters in Art History and in French at the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina, she moved to Paris to study photography at Spéos (2004-2005). After graduation, she assisted several well-known photographers such as Patrick Demarchelier, Carter Smith and Eric Maillet. Molly currently devotes her time to the development of her photography work.
